    Co‑Founders’ Story

Covalence began when two very different experts teamed up to rethink what fashion could be. Patrick Janiak is a concept designer whose résumé ranges from city‑scale master planning to costume design and personal training. Dr. Nathan Walworth is a bio‑geneticist and climate scientist who studies how living systems adapt. Both saw a huge gap in the market: plenty of stylish products exist, but few are built for real‑world utility, adaptability, and human empathy. By combining Patrick’s creative eye with Nathan’s scientific approach, they set out to build accessories that look great and make daily life easier—proving that art and science together can be greater than the sum of their parts.

Experience Key Lesson Why It Matters for Covalence
Global Moves – Lived in seven cities, including Barcelona (Spain) and San Pedro La Laguna (Guatemala) Change can be uncomfortable, but it fuels growth and fresh ideas. Covalence designs adapt to different lifestyles and cultures.
Master Planning & Landscape Architecture – From city benches to brownfield clean‑ups Long‑range planning and thoughtful design can transform whole communities. Each product is engineered for long life and positive impact.
Fly Fishing Nature works as a web—every part affects the rest. Products are designed with ecosystems and supply‑chain impact in mind.
Personal Training Small ergonomic fixes improve physical and mental health. Accessories aim to reduce daily stress and improve posture and balance.
Live‑Action Stunt Costuming What you wear shapes how you move and feel. Items are built for freedom of movement and self‑expression.
Stage Costume Design (Pocket Problem) Everyday pockets fail fast under real use. Balance Bags offload pocket strain, extending your clothing’s life.

    My Design Response:

There is already a heavy environmental footprint laid by the fashion industry. There are enough styles and remixes of styles that I do not see a need to create a traditional clothing line.

My design philosophy is grounded in cognitive psychology, behavioral science, and the principles of extended cognition. By integrating these disciplines into our creative process, we produce accessories that support mental clarity, promote presence, and reduce daily stress. Our products aren't just stylish—they are essential. They reduce the mental clutter associated with everyday decisions, fostering a calmer, more focused state of mind.
